Balloon launch
Every day the Halley team launches a balloon carrying an instrument called a radiosonde. It measures air temperature, humidity, air pressure and wind speed and sends results back to base.
'On a good day they go up to 25 km above the Earth. On bad days we are lucky if we can get them out of the balloon shed! We have to attempt a launch come snow, sun or gale force winds.' Alexandra Gaffikin, British Antarctic Survey
