Storming new satellite
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite orbits the Earth 16 times every 24 hours. It monitors rainfall in the tropics and subtropics - where two thirds of the Earth's rain falls.
Although rainfall gives the best picture of the amount of energy held by storm clouds, current rainfall estimates are very uncertain. TRMM is changing all that by measuring rainfall from space for the first time.
