Climate conundrum

The puzzle: Earth has been hot before - at the time of the dinosaurs and for many millions of years after their extinction. Then, scientists say, the poles were hot, but the tropics seem to have been cooler than today's.

But climate models that try to recreate prehistoric times don't show these cold tropics. In fact, the latest future-looking models predict that the tropics will become blazing hot if we don't get our greenhouse gas emissions under control.

So who's got it wrong?
