Rain Buoy listens to rain
Meet Rain Buoy, brainchild of Southampton oceanographer Graham Quartly. By listening to splashes on the sea surface, Rain Buoy literally hears rain - and it's so good it can tell sea spray from drizzle.
A bit of rain doesn't seem a problem - especially at sea. But too much fresh water in the ocean could upset some crucial currents, radically changing the northern hemisphere's climate.
Now on trial in Cardigan Bay, Rain Buoy will be launched into the open ocean in late 2003.
