How does Rain Buoy listen to the rain?
An underwater microphone - a hydrophone - is Rain Buoy's ear. As well as the pitter-patter of falling rain, it records the sounds of waves, spray and even passing boats.
On-board circuitry analyses the sounds from Rain Buoy and picks out when it has rained.
The float keeps Rain Buoy stable on the surface and the satellite antenna clear from the waves. A navigation light keeps the hull visible to passing ships.
