Let there be light

How do you measure ocean colour?

'Each yacht has three light-detecting instruments called radiometers on its stern, two measuring the ocean surface and a third looking at light levels in the sky. Then on the rudder there's a sophisticated temperature sensor. Every hour, information is beamed to the race office by satellite.'

Eight yachts set out on the Volvo Ocean Adventure yacht race in September 2001. They should cross the finishing line in summer 2002.
