The big picture
Computer models look at how changes in each of part of the climate system might alter the bigger picture. Scientists can simulate past climates to help identify the causes of observed changes.
Models also act as a virtual lab for the future, helping to predict how a change in our carbon dioxide emissions might influence global climate next century, or how events like volcanic eruptions might affect climate.
