Picturing the world

Scientists model the planet with maths instead of geography. They use complex mathematical equations to represent climate processes, feeding the figures into computer programs to make a picture of the whole system.

Although the picture is a simplified version of the world, it gives them a pretty good idea of how the system works for real.
