Future forecast
Our future climate depends on how much carbon dioxide we emit. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change uses 40 different scenarios for future emissions, based on predictions of what the planet's economy, population and technology might be like over the next century.
Each scenario produces a different outcome when fed into a global climate computer model. The animation shows projected temperature changes for a world relying heavily on fossil fuels (left) and one making better use of clean technologies (right).
