Burying carbon
It sounds like the ultimate get-out clause - keeping up our high-octane lifestyles, but burying our emitted carbon dioxide underground so it won't trap heat in the atmosphere.
It's not such an outlandish idea to store carbon dioxide underground - natural stores exist around the world. And we already have the technology for storing carbon dioxide- we could even stash it away in old oil and gas fields.
