So why does adding iron make phytoplankton bloom? 'Phytoplankton need iron as a nutrient', explains Andrew Watson from the University of East Anglia. 'Remote seas don't hold much iron, so that puts a limit on the number of phytoplankton that can grow'.

Professor Watson is studying whether adding iron to oceans to boost phytoplankton populations is an effective way of reducing carbon in the atmosphere.
