Seeding the clouds

How do you keep clouds hanging around? Stop it raining. Scientists have found that if clouds contain lots of small droplets, they're less likely to stick together to make rain. Cloud droplets form around small particles in the atmosphere which come from dust, sea spray and emissions.

Professors Latham and Choularton think that by putting more particles into the atmosphere, we could create more small droplets and make clouds last longer. Clouds with more droplets are also whiter on top, so they would reflect more sunlight.

Particles from power station emissions can help clouds form - but we need to find cleaner ways of seeding clouds.
