Supersonic dream
It was towards the end of the Second World War that the British began to dream of supersonic flight. In a post-war slump and a world that was increasingly dominated by Soviet and American aerospace programmes, Britain needed to prove that it could also make it big, fast - and supersonic.
With the help of the French, the vision soon became reality. Concorde was hailed as an icon of post-war optimism.
