But the new relationship got off to a bumpy start. In 1964, just one month after being elected, Harold Wilson's Labour government tried to dive out of the supersonic programme. The British feared that the project would be a disaster, costing the UK ú900m.
The French threatened to take the matter to the international courts. After several weeks of suspense the Wilson government finally backtracked and the project went full speed ahead.
