|11 mile high club
The super-jet measures just under 62 metres in length. During flight this can stretch between 15 and 25 centimetres due to heating of the airframe. Concorde's top cruising height is 60,000 ft - more than 11 miles high.
Concorde reaches dizzy heights powered by four specially modified Rolls-Royce / Snecma Olympus engines. Each engine guzzles over 25,000 litres of fuel every hour. Afterburners mix fuel with the exhaust gases from each engine's main combustion chamber and burn it to produce the extra power required for take-off and the transition to supersonic flight.
