Concorde was the superstar of the skies. But three decades on she has struggled to keep pace in the changing global aviation market. There were money worries even before the project got off the ground. The adventure ended up costing five times more than originally thought, about ú11 billion in today's money.
Despite a total capacity of only 100 the London to New York route turned a profit during 30 years of flight. But the ageing Concorde fleet began to lose its attraction. As low-budget flights became the norm, fewer and fewer people were willing to pay sky-high prices to cross the Atlantic.
