Chasing success

Concorde was the champion of her time. But can anyone beat her sky-high achievements?

The leading contenders are scramjets. Fuelled by oxygen drawn from the atmosphere, prototype jets tested in Australia could revolutionise the launch of small spacecraft such as satellites. But you'll be lucky if you ever get to board one as it's unlikely that the technology will be used on passenger jets.

'I think the next supersonic transporter will be of a more conventional design operating at around twice the speed of sound.'
