What's next for chicken feathers? Richard is already working on turning them into carbon fibres by heating the feather fibres to very high temperatures without oxygen. He hopes they will eventually be used in planes, houses and automobiles.

'You can make strong carbon fibres out of chicken feathers - they are unique because they remain hollow, offering both strength and light weight,' explains Richard. 'We hope they will make the materials business a little more Earth friendly.'
