The bad old days
Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries are clunky by today's standards, but were the first portable batteries available.
Under new waste laws it will be illegal to sell some NiCd batteries - but that still leaves thousands of old toxic time bombs to deal with.
They're recycled to retrieve nickel and cadmium. The process is already pretty efficient, but 100% of all cadmium will have to be retrieved under new battery laws.
