Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries were the next technology to hit the streets. They're non-toxic, and there are well-established ways of recycling them to retrieve the nickel metal and hydrogen gas.

Over the years they improved in size and performance, but you're unlikely to come across them in today's phones - newer technologies are even lighter and more powerful.
