A Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery probably powers your phone today - they're nearly twice as powerful as older nickel-based batteries, although you don't get as many recharges out of them.
Europe is committed to recycling 2500 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries by 2010, but we're nowhere near the target yet.
