Look at the laws
Two new laws will tackle our toxic techno-junk. First, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive will target our gadgets before they hit the shelves, cutting down six toxic chemicals in favour of safer alternatives.
The second, the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Directive, tackles our gizmos at the end of their lives. Once we've finished with any electrical product, the company that made or imported it will have to pay to recycle it safely, or arrange for it to be reused.
