Invisible demons
Keith Freegard is a plastics recycler. He needs to be able to sort mixed, waste plastics into the different polymer types. He also needs to be able to spot plastics containing certain types of older brominated flame-retardants, because they cannot be used in new gadgets.
He explains the problem, 'Current sorting methods can separate different types of plastics, but can't easily identify the additives contained within them. We are looking at some new processing techniques that can separate the plastics with brominated flame retardants from those without.'
