LCD legacy
But why should we care if loads of screens are thrown away?
Pete Murphy is a mobile phone recycler who is interested in the LCD legacy.
'There are lots of chemicals that can be used to make liquid crystals for LCDs. Old-style crystals can break down over time, so if they are in landfill, they could eventually leach into food and water supplies. The fact that newer types of crystals don't break down could also be a problem - they can hang around in landfill for hundreds of years!'
