But this precious liquid is not easy to get at. There are lots of types of liquid crystals and if you mix them together, they won't work.
That poses a problem because it means that every mobile screen would have to be assessed and sorted according to the chemicals in the display. You couldn't crush them up all together and then separate out the bits you want, like you can with plastics, or even the traces of treasure on circuit boards.
