What was all the fuss about?

By 1953 scientists had already worked out that DNA stores the information that makes each of us unique. But nobody had managed to pin down the structure of the DNA molecule - the real key to understanding how it does its job.

By working out how all the components of DNA are arranged, Watson and Crick were able to guess how the molecule copies itself and carries the genetic code.
