Changing the code
Genetic engineering techniques range from investigating DNA to cloning human tissue - and maybe someday to cloning humans themselves. The basic principles behind deliberately altering DNA are the same for a bacterium, plant or animal, but the techniques get more difficult for more complex organisms.
This obese mouse was produced at the Rowett Research Institute in Scotland by 'knocking out' a gene responsible for influencing the animal's appetite.
