Building a DNA cube

In 1991 Seeman made the first 3D shape out of DNA - the frame for a cube - by making two DNA squares and linking them together. It took a lot of work, and it was difficult to make a lot of cubes at once.

'It was very hard to make the cube. We had to use 10 different pieces of DNA, and we ended up with a lot of shapes that hadn't formed properly.'
Ned Seeman, DNA nanotechnology expert, New York University
