Ancient times

Archaeologists have found evidence that people were keeping sheep nearly 11,000 years ago. Both sheep and people have changed a lot since then.

We depend on sheep for wool, but while a modern fleece is white and thick, primitive sheep were brown and hairy. By mating animals with finer wool together, farmers have made wool what it is today. Over thousands of years, this selective breeding has changed the genetic make-up of sheep.
