Small but mighty

The swarm's mini-robots are made in Switzerland and are available off the shelf - a snip at just £1200 each. But the scientists building the Guardian swarm, led by a team at Sheffield Hallam University, are busy modifying and upgrading them so they're up to the tasks ahead.

'The first stage of our research will take three years. We'll be improving the mini-robots' wireless networks, and fitting them with electronic noses to sniff out dangerous fumes,' explains research coordinator Jacques Penders, from Sheffield Hallam University.
