For the experts, the project will be a success if they can prove their robots are up to the job. 'We want evidence that we'll really be able to support firefighters in an actual fire,' says Jacques.
But it'll still take a few years after that for the robots to be widely used in the field. Once the scientists are sure they're on the right track, the robots will need a few more upgrades - such as fireproofing.
