Mobile network
'Each robot acts like a fully sending and receiving mobile phone,' explains research coordinator Jacques Penders from Sheffield Hallam University. 'They form a dynamic and flexible wireless network.'
Some of the robots in the swarm act as 'base stations' - the main hub of a wireless network - while others act as 'clients', talking to the other robots through the base stations. This makes communication particularly robust, and able to overcome interference.
