Lie of the land

'There are a lot of warehouses in South Yorkshire,' explains Neil Baugh, Station Manager for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. 'Around Doncaster, for example, the land is generally flat, which lends itself to warehouses.

'We're talking really large premises, on a massive scale - a difficult and dangerous place to search in a fire, particularly because there's often no visibility whatsoever.

'We provided the robotics experts with the problems we faced, and this helped concentrate their research.'
