All a big mistake?
Some scientists say that LB1 is merely a short modern human with a brain disorder called microcephaly. People with microcephaly have abnormally small heads and usually have some form of learning disability. It is a rare
condition - in the UK, around 1 in 10,000 people is affected.
These critics do not accept that a human species with a brain so small could have lived so recently and made the intricate stone tools found alongside LB1 in her cave.
