What's the verdict?
Dean Falk explains why she thinks the critics are wrong:
'Our team of American, Australian and Indonesian scientists studied the outside surface of the brain of LB1 and compared it to similar data from chimpanzees, humans, fossils including Homo erectus, a human pygmy, and a "true" microcephalic. The endocast of LB1 least resembles that of the "true" microcephalic that we studied. It also does not look like an endocast from a modern pygmy, the overall shape of which resembles that from other Homo sapiens.'
