No cure needed
Is being deaf a condition that needs curing? The procedure to fit a cochlear implant - an electronic device that can help the profoundly deaf regain some hearing - involves complicated and invasive surgery. Some deaf people have argued that it's completely unnecessary in the first place.
Their view is that there's nothing wrong with being deaf - it's just another culture, full of people who speak a different language. Deaf people who have a strong cultural identity are often said to belong to the Deaf community - deaf with a capital 'D'.
