Diesel cars use less fuel and produce less carbon dioxide than petrol vehicles. But it's not all good news - they produce more soot that can cause health problems. Controlling these soot emissions is tricky. The soot can be trapped in a filter, but a high-temperature burst is needed now and again to burn the soot and stop the filter clogging up.
