Worst-case scenario
Martian conditions make landing unbelievably tricky. Past missions have been cursed with failure - only half have been a success.
Scientists' worst fear is that Beagle 2 had a rough landing. If its cushioning air sacs hit a sharp rock and burst, the jagged Martian surface will have taken its toll on the small probe. Beagle 2 may be lying smashed to pieces on the Red Planet.
