Freak flood
Scientists have created the most detailed map ever of the English Channel seabed, revealing an ancient secret. It shows a massive freak flood hundreds of thousands of years ago is the reason - possibly the only reason - why Britain is no longer joined to France.
'The event that caused the flood was probably a one-off,' explains Sanjeev Gupta from Imperial College London. 'If it hadn't happened, Britain would still be connected directly to Europe.'
