Digging deeper

'The most striking evidence that the valley was created by a catastrophic flood is the presence of small "islands" with a distinct shape,' explains Sanjeev.

The islands are called 'streamlined' islands, because the flood has carved them into an 'aerodynamic' shape to reduce the amount of friction between land and water. This only happens in a powerful flood - if the valley had been formed by an ordinary river, the scientists wouldn't have found this type of island.

'Streamlined' islands, shown above, have shapes similar to those found in the aerodynamics of cars and planes.
