March of the humans

The mega-flood that made Britain an island had a major impact on the migration of early humans in Europe. There's little evidence that early humans were in Britain between 180,000 and 60,000 years ago, despite a warm climate and plenty of big mammals around for food.

Our ancestors hadn't yet worked out how to build boats, and scientists think that after sea levels rose following the flood people could no longer reach Britain from France. 'Only the plucky few managed to cross,' says Jenny Collier from Imperial College London.
