Rise and fall

The rise in sea level was followed by a dramatic drop, a pattern that has repeated several times over the past 500,000 years. Once levels fell to more than 40 metres below our current sea level, early humans were able to cross into Britain again.

'This happened around 60,000 years ago, and coincides with the first human site found in this country after a gap of 120,000 years,' explains Sanjeev Gupta from Imperial College London.
