With hardly any measles about these days, we had to ask Helen Bedford, vaccination expert and former health visitor, to remind us how bad it can be.

'Prior to 1968, when measles vaccine was introduced in this country virtually everybody got measles. It's a very infectious disease and the peak age for getting it is primary school age so there was plenty of chance for it to spread. About 1 child in every 15 will suffer complications as well as the standard symptoms of rash, fever, conjunctivitis, cough and feeling unwell.
