Public Outrage
Vaccination in the UK has always had its share of controversy. In 1853 an Act of Parliament made vaccination compulsory for all infants under 3 months. Over the next 20 years a series of further Acts were introduced which threatened persistent fines or imprisonment for parents who refused to comply.
This provoked an explosion of outrage and the appearance of a well-organised and vocal movement for amendment of the vaccination legislation.
