Girls and boys
DNA is packaged into chromosomes inside our cells and it is the X and Y chromosomes which determine our gender. Girls inherit an X chromosome from each parent. Boys inherit an X chromosome from their mother and a Y chromosome from their father. So the Y chromosome can be used to trace a man's direct, male ancestors.
Antenna asked Motherland scientist Mark Jobling how he was able to track project volunteer Mark Anderson's Y chromosome to Europe.
