Sorting it out

'We analyse variable sequences of DNA - called markers - on the Y chromosome. Markers change slowly over long periods of time. We can use these changes to place the Y chromosome into a broad category called a 'haplogroup'. These haplogroups often show clear geographical patterns which make them good for tracing ancestry.'
