African slaves
Between 1500 and 1870 over 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic as slaves, including many millions to the Caribbean sugar plantations. There are very few written records of who they are and where they came from, making it virtually impossible for Afro-Caribbeans to trace their African roots.
But Peter Forster and his team at the University of Cambridge used their genetic skills to help the Motherland volunteers track down their African roots.
