Family tree branches
Going back ten generations in your family tree means you have over 1000 ancestors, branching off in lots of directions. The DNA that Mark studied is inherited from every branch of the tree, so the results give more information about all of the volunteers' ancestors.
The other types of DNA tests used in the Motherland project are only inherited from the men and women on the very outside branches of the tree, so they only give information about a very small proportion of the volunteers' ancestors.
