Origin: Africa

Mark's team found that most of the DNA sequences of the volunteers were of African origin.

'The average contribution of African sequences was about 89 per cent and European sequences 11 per cent. When we did a similar study on African Americans living in Washington DC, we found an approximately 80 per cent African, 20 per cent European split.'

Mark Shriver, geneticist, Penn State University
