The MRSA epidemic
What factors have led to the MRSA epidemic?
'The current epidemic started in the 1990s as a result of new strains emerging at the same time as a change in how we managed patients. Increased numbers of patients and complex procedures meant it became difficult to prevent the spread of MRSA.
'We are less able to close wards and isolate patients to reduce the number of people coming into contact with infected patients. These factors combined allow the epidemic in the UK to continue to increase.'
